Volunteer opportunities

Assisting with Boarding House

Currently, we have 70 students at the Deaf Unit. 55 children board at the school during the week and go home on the weekends, and a further 15 stay at the school during the school year and go home only during long breaks.

Before the start of the school day (6.30-9:00am) and after school (after 3:00pm) the children need someone to supervise them, assist them with getting up and going to bed and doing activities with them. Assistance with learning Egyptian Sign Language will be provided for volunteers.

Physical Education

From 8:00-8.30am and 3:00-6:00pm the children have free time and we would like to divide the children into groups and develop extra-curricular activity program. We are looking for a volunteer to run a fun and effective physical education program.

Computer Classes

Computer skills are crucial for the children to learn, as it will help them in their future life. The Deaf Unit has an established computer lab and library. We need a volunteer to assist with training in basic computer skills. This would be either during class time (9:00am-3:00pm) or during free time (3:00-6:00pm). This volunteer may also be able to assist with looking after our (WordPress) website.

English Classes

The Deaf Unit has developed an English language curriculum called ‘Start with English,’ which provides the corresponding signs in Egyptian Sign Language and Arabic words for the English. We need teachers who can teach basic English during the school day (9am-3pm) and who can read stories in the library.

First Aid Trainer

We would like to find a volunteer who is willing to come and teach first aid to teachers, staff, and the adult deaf.

Specialists for the Audiology Clinic

We have a fledgling Audiology Clinic at the Deaf Unit which provides affordable hearing tests and ear moulds. We need experts in this field who will come as volunteers to train the local staff and deaf adults.

Multi-Media Experts

We would like to record short videos of the children and adults telling stories in Egyptian Sign Language which will be a resource for the centre. We have some multi-media equipment, and a/some volunteer(s) is/are needed to create the videos and to each skills to others.

Pre-Vocational Trainer

Part of the Deaf Unit curriculum is pre-vocational training to teach the students skills which will help them to find employment in the future. Volunteers are particularly needed during the school day (9:00am to 3:00pm) to teach:

  • Art
  • Simple/basic carpentry for boys
  • Sewing for girls

Office & Secretarial Support

A volunteer is needed to assist the director with writing funding proposals, reports, newsletters and emails and learning how to update our (WordPress) website.
